What is elevation?

Elevation is the measurement of how high a point is above sea level. It usually refers to the height of a location on the Earth's surface, rather than in the air.

On the other hand, altitude is a measurement of an object's height, often indicating your distance above the ground, such as when you're in an airplane or a satellite.

While elevation is commonly used to describe the height of your current location, terms like altitude and height above sea level are also frequently used to convey the same concept.

Earth elevation and climate

Elevation plays a significant role in climate patterns and human settlements. The majority of the global population resides in coastal plains with elevations below 150 meters (500 feet).

However, certain cultures have adapted to higher elevations. For instance, in Tibet, located in central Asia, people live at elevations reaching as high as 5,334 meters (17,500 feet).

Beyond this elevation, the climate becomes too cold for agriculture, and the air lacks sufficient oxygen to support human life.

Highs and Lows

The highest point on Earth is at the summit of Mount Everest in border of Nepal and China (Tibet), which reaches a height of 8,848 meters (29,035 feet).

On the other hand, the lowest land elevation point is found at the Dead Sea, located on the border of Israel and Jordan. Its shores are situated 420 meters (1,385 feet) below sea level.

Elevation vs. Altitude

"Elevation" typically refers to the height of a location above sea level or another reference point on the Earth's surface. It measures how high or low something is in relation to the Earth's surface.

"Altitude" on the other hand, usually refers to the height of an object or location above the Earth's surface in the sky or atmosphere. It measures how high something is above the ground or a specific point on the Earth's surface.

In simple terms, elevation is about how high something is above the ground, while altitude is about how high something is above the Earth's surface.

Water Quality

Did you know that the elevation of a place can affect the quality of its tap water?

For instance, Austria, with its stunning mountains, boasts high-quality tap water in Vienna. Similarly, Tokyo's tap water is safe, thanks to reservoirs sourced from surrounding mountains.

Higher elevations often have cleaner tap water because the water has to travel through less polluted areas.

This means that people living in mountainous regions might have better-quality tap water compared to those living in low-lying areas, such as Bangkok.
