What is my elevation

Lesotho Elevation Map

Lesotho, also known as the Kingdom in the Sky, is a mountainous country with rugged terrain, steep slopes and high altitude plateaus. The country is located in Southern Africa and is surrounded by South Africa. The elevation map of Lesotho is characterized by various zones and ranges with heights ranging from 1,400 to 3,482 meters above sea level.

The Maloti Mountains, which are part of the Drakensberg mountain range, run through Lesotho from northwest to southeast and serve as the source of many rivers. The land in Lesotho is deeply incised and undulating, with valleys, canyons, and slopes. The high mountain peaks of the country cause significant variations in weather patterns, with snowfalls experienced on some peaks during winter seasons.

Lesotho

The altitude of Lesotho is also responsible for its relatively cool to cold climate, with temperatures lowering as altitude increases. Lesotho’s elevation map is characterized by vast amounts of grasslands and rugged terrain, with relatively small arable land. The country’s terrain presents challenges to agriculture, mining, and infrastructure development.

Despite the challenges, Lesotho’s high altitude offers some compensation. The mountainous terrain of Lesotho is blessed with a variety of flora and fauna that cannot easily be found in other countries. The high altitude plateaus provide fertile grazing lands for cattle, goats, and sheep. Lesotho has a great potential for tourism due to its beautiful landscape, including natural reserves and waterfalls.

Highest point

Thabana Ntlenyana is Lesotho's highest point, standing at an elevation of 3,482 meters above sea level. It is located in the Maloti Mountains, which runs along the border between Lesotho and South Africa. Thabana Ntlenyana is a popular destination for hikers and climbers interested in reaching the highest peak in Southern Africa south of Kilimanjaro.

Lowest point

The lowest point in Lesotho is the junction of the Makhaleng and Orange rivers, which is located at an elevation of 1,400 meters above sea level. The Makhaleng River is one of the many rivers that flows out of the Maloti Mountains, while the Orange River serves as the border between South Africa and Lesotho.

Similar landscape

Lesotho's elevation map is similar to that of neighboring South Africa, which is also mountainous, especially in the western and eastern regions. Zimbabwe, Swaziland, and Botswana are other Southern African countries with some mountainous areas but not as pronounced as Lesotho and South Africa.
